Stripe allows businesses to accept and process payments both nationally and internationally, send invoices, issue cards, manage payments and invoices, and obtain financing. It offers intuitive APIs that can be customized to specific needs. The platform boasts high performance with over 99.99% availability and AES-356 encryption for credit card numbers. Stripe handles over 250 million API requests daily, has a 99.999% uptime record, and is available in over 47 countries.

Pros from reviewers

  • Easy integration: Stripe is valued for its straightforward use and seamless integration with point of sale systems, making it an excellent choice for both startups and established businesses

  • Cost-effectiveness: Stripe does not charge user fees, only transaction processing fees, making it a cost-effective solution for businesses trying to keep overhead low

  • Comprehensive dashboard: The Stripe dashboard offers a wealth of data, providing valuable insights for businesses

  • User-friendly: Stripe is easy to use and offers a client portal, making it simple to onboard new clients and transition existing ones

  • Versatility: Stripe is capable of managing one-time payments, automatic recurring subscriptions, standalone purchases, and business invoices, making it an all-in-one solution for businesses.

Cons from reviewers

  • Inadequate customization options: For sole proprietors or small businesses, the inability to scale down some of Stripe's features can make the platform unnecessarily complex. This lack of customization can lead to a cluttered and confusing user interface

  • Limited dispute resolution support: When dealing with chargebacks, Stripe only allows for a single document to be uploaded for dispute resolution. This can be limiting when multiple pieces of evidence are required to resolve a dispute

  • Poor customer service: Numerous users have reported issues with Stripe's customer service, including lack of follow-up, inability to resolve issues in a timely manner, and difficulty in reaching a representative. This can lead to prolonged issues and frustration.

  • Lack of payment failure alerts: Despite its overall user-friendliness, Stripe does not notify users when a payment fails. This can lead to missed payments and potential financial discrepancies

  • Confusing fee structure: Some users find Stripe's fee structure to be unclear and difficult to understand. This lack of transparency can lead to unexpected costs and financial planning difficulties

Stripe and Square are both popular payment processing solutions for businesses, but they have distinct differences that cater to specific needs.

One significant difference lies in their core offerings. Stripe primarily focuses on online payment processing and provides a robust set of tools for e-commerce businesses. It excels in handling subscription billing, customizable checkout experiences, and fraud prevention measures. Stripe is highly developer-friendly and offers extensive APIs for customization, making it a preferred choice for tech-savvy businesses.

In contrast, Square offers a more comprehensive suite of services, including in-person point-of-sale (POS) solutions in addition to online payments. Who is Stripe best for according to our reviewers?

  • Ecommerce Businesses: Ecommerce businesses can use Stripe to accept payments through their websites. Despite some limitations, such as the inability to add custom notes to customers and the requirement for detailed information to process a credit card, it's chosen over other platforms like Shopify for its all-in-one ecommerce and point of sale solution

  • Startups and Established Businesses: Stripe is excellent for both startups and established businesses due to its straightforward use and integration with point of sale systems. It can manage one-time payments and automatic recurring subscriptions, making it a cost-effective choice for businesses of all sizes

  • Sole Proprietors: Sole proprietors can benefit from Stripe's client portal, which makes it easy to onboard new clients and transition existing ones. The software doesn't charge user fees, only transaction processing fees, and offers a dashboard with a wealth of data

  • Small Businesses: Small businesses can utilize Stripe for gathering debit and credit card payments. It's user-friendly and clients find it easy to use for making payments. However, some users find the fee structure confusing

  • Non-Profit Organizations: Non-profit organizations can use Stripe to process annual dues and other payments. The software's API can be integrated with HTML and PHP to record payments in an organization's database. However, some users have reported issues with account verification and fund deposits.

Retired Software Developer's Review on Stripe

As a retired software developer, I now manage three non-profit, club-based websites. We have annual dues for each club and have integrated payment through Stripe. I utilize the Stripe API to process these payments via HTML and PHP, recording them in our club database. The tutorials and videos provided by Stripe made this process quite straightforward.

Stripe's Limitations: A Challenge to Navigate

The software feels outdated, like it's from the 1990s. It's great that it doesn't require a landline, but it's missing some key features, such as processing credit card payments in the field or in-store without internet. I like that I can accept payments through my ecommerce website, but I can't add a custom note to my customers and it requires too much information to process a credit card, like the billing address, which is quite inconvenient. I wish it had a credit card swipe feature to avoid having to input so much information. I've contacted customer service about this, but they've never followed up. I chose Stripe Billing over Shopify because Shopify is expensive and charges per transaction as well as a percentage of the sale. I switched to Stripe Billing because I needed an all-in-one ecommerce and point of sale solution, rather than separate services for each.

      Experiencing a Nightmare Through Stripe

Update: The response email from Stripe directed me back to the same Support Team that hasn't been helpful so far. The email address they provided doesn't work. If I could, I would give this review negative stars. Dealing with Stripe Support via email has been a nightmare. I have repeatedly requested a call back because after 18 months of having an account, support suddenly needs to verify that the non-profit association is legitimate. I have submitted the required paperwork multiple times, but support keeps sending the same template response asking for the same documents again. I was informed that Stripe is not equipped to contact anyone by phone. Stripe has stopped depositing funds into the account and is holding the funds until the account can be verified. They were more than happy to process over 1k last year for this association, but now that money is coming in quickly this year, they are holding it. This is extremely frustrating and unprofessional.

Stripe: The Ultimate Payment Processing Solution

I switched to Stripe from my previous payment processor and have been extremely satisfied ever since. I was initially worried about the potential need for extensive HTML coding, but the Stripe client portal made it easy to onboard new clients and transition my existing ones. Stripe doesn't charge user fees, only transaction processing fees, which I appreciate. I particularly like the dashboard, which offers a wealth of data. However, as a sole proprietor, I wish I could scale down some features to simplify my platform. I chose Stripe Billing because it's an all-in-one software with a client portal. I made the switch because my business had grown to the point where I needed a software capable of managing subscriptions, standalone purchases, and business invoices.
