What is Camtasia?

Camtasia is a robust software developed by TechSmith, designed for creating video tutorials and presentations either via screencast or through a direct recording plug-in to Microsoft PowerPoint. It offers a user-friendly interface with features such as a multi-track timeline for managing clips and layers, audio and video editing tools, and a library of royalty-free music and sound effects. Camtasia's standout feature is its ability to easily capture high-quality screen recordings. It also offers interactive features like quizzes and clickable links within videos. The final product can be exported in various formats or shared directly on platforms like YouTube or Vimeo. This software is ideal for educators, businesses, and anyone needing to create professional-grade video content.

Pros from reviewers

  • Comprehensive features: The software includes a range of tools such as easy video editing, the ability to add shapes, arrows, texts, and graphics, functional audio effects, easy-to-use video pan and zoom tools, and a subtitle function

  • Excellent screenshot tool: Camtasia includes a fantastic screenshot tool that significantly aids in work processes

  • Seamless uploading to YouTube: The software makes it easy to upload videos directly to YouTube, simplifying the sharing process

  • Affordable and good cost-benefit ratio: Despite its comprehensive features, Camtasia is reasonably priced and offers excellent value for money.

  • Intuitive interface: Camtasia's user-friendly design allows users to produce high-quality results without needing to be a video editing expert

Cons from reviewers

  • Software instability: Some users have reported that the software crashes frequently, causing them to lose work, and that the company's support service is often unavailable or unhelpful.

  • Large video output size: The video output from Camtasia is often large, and reducing the size can compromise the quality, which can be problematic for users who need to share or upload their videos online

  • Software startup delay: Camtasia takes some time to start up, which can be inconvenient for users who need to quickly access the software for their work

  • Additional cost for updates: While purchasing the software gives you perpetual ownership, updates may not be included and currently cost around $50 per year, which can be a financial burden for some users

  • Lack of advanced features: Camtasia is not suitable for professional users who require exceptional effects and motion graphics, and it lacks an inbound audio editor and filter, which means users need a separate audio software

      Can't Live Without SnagIt

I rely heavily on SnagIt and have been consistently purchasing its latest versions for over 3 years. When I upgraded to the 219 version, it kept crashing, but Techsmith's excellent support team quickly resolved the issue. I couldn't ask for more from a software company.

Camtasia 223 Constantly Crashes on AMD.

I have been using Camtasia for several years now and I pay for their maintenance service for free updates. Honestly, it's an excellent video editor in terms of ease of use. However, despite several updates, the current edition (223) is full of lags and crashes on my AMD 78X3D powered, 64 GB, RTX 39. Just a few assets on the timeline cause freezes and crashes. Luckily, as a long-time customer, I still have access to some previous editions, so I'm stuck using Camtasia 222, which runs perfectly for me. Techsmith also seems to ignore or even delete forum messages reporting this issue. They deleted my forum posts when I reported these problems, so they seem to be trying to cover this up.

Camtasia: Once a Reliable Tool, Now a Frustrating Downfall

I used to view Camtasia as a dependable software until I upgraded to a newer version a few months ago. Since then, it's been a nightmare. I had support, but they were consistently unavailable and submitting a support ticket was challenging. Even when I managed to do so, I had to wait for days for a response, only to receive the same pdf I had already found, which didn't resolve my issue. They then closed my ticket. It was a total waste of my time and money. The software now crashes constantly, causing me to lose work with no solution in sight. The updates don't seem to enhance anything, they just cause more crashes and unreliability. I don't feel the company is dedicated to this product anymore. They just seem to be trying to keep it running. Scheduling a recording is relatively easy, but the constant updates erase your settings each time. The output files as MP4 are easy to view, but I have to adjust the settings.
