What is Singlestore?

SingleStore is a high-performance, in-memory database that merges the capabilities of relational and non-relational databases. It's designed for real-time transaction processing and analytics, aiding businesses in making immediate data-driven decisions. SingleStore offers a unified architecture that simplifies data infrastructure and accelerates insights. It supports SQL and can ingest data from various sources. The software is scalable, with features like automatic sharding, synchronous replication, and fault tolerance for reliability. It's suitable for applications requiring quick response times and can be deployed across public clouds, on-premises servers or as a managed service.

Pros from reviewers

  • Seamless integration: The software integrates well with AWS and other services, making it ideal for users who heavily use multi-petabyte S3 and large Kafka clusters

  • Easy to use: SingleStore is user-friendly and can be set up quickly, allowing for the creation of a customer-facing streaming analytics data store in a short period of time

  • High performance: SingleStore provides sub-second responses even with heavy API calls, scanning billions of rows across numerous tables and applying RBAC functionalities instantly

  • Scalability: SingleStore is a distributed database that can be scaled out, unlike some fixed, vendor-maintained appliances, making it suitable for managing large data sets

  • Compatibility: SingleStore is API-compatible with the MySQL dialect, allowing users to use MySQL-targeted tools to query data on SingleStore.

Cons from reviewers

  • Poor customer support: Some users have reported dissatisfaction with the customer support, finding it difficult to get on-call representative support even for high priority issues.

  • Absence of certain features: Some users have noted the absence of a dedicated client interface, built-in data modeling capabilities, and a superior front end to assist developers

  • Difficulty with complex queries and documentation: Some users have reported difficulties with executing complex queries and a lack of detailed documentation

  • Lack of maturity: Despite its impressive features, SingleStore is not fully mature and lacks some administrative functions such as incremental, point-in-time, and object-specific backups and restore

  • High cost for self-hosted solutions: Implementing a backup on a self-hosted solution can be challenging due to the need to backup large amounts of data, making it a costly option

Solid In-Memory Database, Yet Customer Support Falls Short

Overall, I appreciate SingleStore's products, but I find some key features lacking. I'm particularly impressed by its dual function as an In-memory DB and Relational DB, a feature not common in most In-Memory products. The query response times are also praiseworthy. However, I'm dissatisfied with the customer support, as it's difficult to get on-call representative support even for PROD-Sev1 issues. I also noticed the absence of two-way DB replication for DataCenters. I chose SingleStore mainly for its In-memory Relational DB feature, which was also the reason I switched to it. In response to my concerns, the vendor asked me to contact community@memsql.com to discuss my support experience and escalate my concerns for improved future service. I received this response in October 2019.

Top-tier In-Memory SQL Solution on the Market

MemSQL has greatly simplified my data lake system, allowing me to extract significant business value. I can now query large volumes of IOT data, trillions of rows, in milliseconds. Business databases that used to take hours to run on similar hardware now operate sub-second on MemSQL. The transition was challenging, but MemSQL provided support throughout. The software delivers impressive performance, ANSI and PL SQL compatibility, making the transition from traditional databases easier. It's highly scalable, easy to set up and use, and provides excellent support. However, it currently lacks incremental backups, failback of replications, transaction logging, and recoverable snapshots. These features are expected to be added soon. I chose SingleStore for its simplicity, legacy compatibility, and performance. The main reason for switching to SingleStore was its superior performance.

      Lightning Speed with SingleStore

I appreciate SingleStore for its impressive speed and suitability for real-time applications. However, I encountered confusion with the documentation regarding what is stored in memory and what on disk. Despite configuring all our tables to be on disk, we faced numerous usage alerts that were time-consuming to resolve. We transitioned to SingleStore for its quicker reads, aggregates, and the capability to query on a rolling index.

Superior Hadoop Alternative at a Fraction of the Cost

I needed a solution to aggregate stats from my real-time bidding logs. Previously, I used Hadoop Hive which took over 2 hours to complete the task. However, after switching to MemSQL, now known as SingleStore, I was able to finish the aggregation within 20 minutes. The deployment process was quick and painless, and it integrated well with my existing SQL-based data pipelines. I replaced my expensive and difficult-to-maintain Hadoop cluster with SingleStore at a fraction of the cost. I did face some stability issues initially, but the support team was proactive in addressing these and provided fixes in later releases. Synchronizing with an external MySQL meta-database was not straightforward, so I had to create custom synchronization scripts. I switched to SingleStore mainly due to the high cost of maintaining a Hadoop cluster with 2 devops engineers. The vendor was pleased with the exceptional performance I was getting.
