What is OpenShift?

OpenShift is a cloud-based, open-source Platform as a Service (PaaS) developed by Red Hat. It enables developers to create, test, and deploy applications in the cloud, supporting various programming languages and databases. OpenShift automates management, allowing developers to focus on coding rather than infrastructure. It offers features like scaling, load balancing, and health monitoring of applications. OpenShift is suitable for building stand-alone apps and microservices and integrates with continuous integration/continuous delivery pipelines. It uses Docker for containerization and Kubernetes for orchestration, making it a robust solution for enterprise application development and deployment. Special promotions are available on OpenShift and similar software, providing an opportunity to streamline the development process.

OpenShift: A Developer's Top Choice Platform

I have been using OpenShift for over two years and have observed significant improvements, it's constantly evolving. The standout feature for me is the provision of a lifetime free account, which allows me to gain hands-on experience with OpenShift. Notably, even with a free account, I can attach my own domain to my application. OpenShift operates using gears and cartridges, with a broad selection of cartridges available and the option to create custom ones. The free lifetime account comes with 3 small gears and allows for multiple cartridges in a single gear. It also supports deployment on git push. Although I can't sudo login to my gear, their customer service is always available to handle such situations.

Ushering in a New Age of Software Architecture with OpenShift

I find OpenShift user-friendly and full of beneficial features. It streamlines and enhances the transition to an innovative, containerized architecture. I can opt for the community edition (OpenShift Origin) or the RED HAT edition. It's built on Kubernetes and fully integrated with numerous other handy tools for monitoring and managing the entire software cycle, up to deployment. However, I find the documentation insufficient and community support slower than I'd prefer. I also think the security aspect needs more thorough discussion.

Openshift: Switched to Linode due to Abrupt Transition from v2 to v3

I appreciated Openshift v2 as an excellent product. However, my issue began when Red Hat suddenly required all users to transition from v2 to v3, a completely different container-based version. The provided migration documentation was ineffective, resulting in my unsuccessful migration attempt. This experience diminished my trust in Red Hat, leading me to switch to Linode, and I haven't reconsidered since.
